Angry Birds Friends is shutting down!

Ok, don’t freak out. I maaaaay have stretched the truth a bit in the title. I’m sorry about that. Don’t be mad – it’s for a good cause!

March 28th is date of the 8th annual Earth Hour lights-off event. We humans use electricity constantly, and that electricity doesn’t just come out of thin air – unless we’re talking wind turbines, in which case, it does come from thin air, but wind turbines account for quite a small percentage of the electricity generated on earth.

Most electricity comes from burning fossil fuels. As you may know, all that fossil fuel burning isn’t so great for our planet – or at least not for sustaining life on our planet. And since we’d like to keep living on this planet of ours…

Where was I? Right – Earth Hour! Earth Hour was started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 by WWF as a way to help raise awareness and encourage work to change climate change. Since then, over 7,000 cities and towns have been participating in the event. Check out the video below for some background.

You can participate in Earth Hour too! Here’s what you do:

1. On March 28th, turn off all lights for one hour starting at 8:30 pm.

That’s it. Easy right?

But don’t stop there! After Earth Hour, be sure to switch off all lights/electronic things that you don’t really need, or that you aren’t using. We can do that like everyday, right? No need for a special hour. Less electricity used = less fossil fuels burned = a more habitable planet for all. Use #yourpower to reduce your impact on climate change!

So what does this have to do with Angry Birds Friends? Well, AB Friends is holding a week-long Earth Hour tournament starting today! Also, to participate in Earth Hour itself, the game will be shutting down for one hour on March 28th starting at 8:30 pm. That’s Finland time – go here for time zone conversion to find what time that is in your part of the world.

No bird-flinging will be happening during that hour, but not to worry – the game will be back online at 9:30 pm (also Finland time). Whew!
